News from the British Jewellers' Association:
"I have just been advised by Royal Mail that they have abandoned their plans for their new High Value Special Delivery Service – which was the subject of our high level campaign in 2007. In their e-mail to me they say that:
“In terms of the new High Value service, you will be aware that we pursued the development of a new service that would support the needs of customers posting items that are considered “valuable and attractive”. Through the Postcomm consultation process and our conversations with you and your colleagues, it was a challenger to balance the needs of customers with a commercially viable service offering. Sadly, we are currently at a point where we are unable to square this circle. Feedback to the consultation highlighted a key concern regarding the impact of potential price increases necessary to reflect the increased use of cash in transit vehicles. Given that your members provided the majority of the feedback we felt sure that simply pressing ahead would be unacceptable too your industry.
After much debate we have resolved to place greater emphasis on improving local security measures within the existing Special Delivery network to safeguard high value goods without the need to introduce the new service. This has resulted in the launch of a security compliance programme focussed around identify and protect.”
This means that the compensation limit will stay at £2,500 instead of £5,000 as originally proposed and there will be no changes except for a possible tightening of counter procedures."
